Dolly... like the hurricane?

Not so long ago, I decided to film whatever there was to film around me. To anybody who likes to video record everything and anything, there is 2 things you should try to avoid; surround noises and camera shaking. On this blog, I will explain the tools used to refrain the camera from moving too much.

So the answer is no, not like the hurricane Dolly, but like the piece of equipment used for any box office movies. The camera Dolly is used to move back and forth or in perfect circles without the unpleasant shaking feeling of being in a roller coaster. You can place the Dolly on any surface, but most of the time the dolly is set on tracks. A great effect is when the tracks are curved into a circle and the dolly turns around a group of actors, because it is a good way to show the viewer where the scene is taking place.

Dollys keep evolving. As we speak, there is a prototype of dollys with an air cussion underneath to give a floating effect.

On the picture above is a special kind of Dolly, in which it films the actor/actress getting out the door, and the camera follows him/her as he/she goes down the stairs.

On the video underneath, is an example of homemade dolly tracks, which I personally think is a brilliant idea. From this video, you see that it doesn't cost much to make your film shots better. I hope, from now on, if somebody obsessed with movies like talks about the Dolly, you won't think of the hurricane or the Barbie doll. Until next time,
